Paper dolls became popular in Japan during the Edo Period (approx 1600-1868). With the rise in popularity of origami, shioro ningyo, or "bookmark doll" in Japanese,   became more prevelant and often were made for kids to play with. Typically created with scraps of beautiful washi paper or chiyogami paper, an intricately designed paper that often mimics kimono pattern.
