I love to junk journal but my energy level specifically for gathering ephemera can range wildly. Sometimes I’m a lil’ magpie bopping around town getting bits and bobs from a bunch of different locations, and sometimes I’m so overwhelmed with the things I have on hand that I want to sit in one place and churn through a few spreads...

There’s something special about a well-loved sketchbook. It holds half-formed ideas, grocery lists, brilliant thoughts, questionable drawings, and all those little things you swear you’ll remember later. Why not give it a cover that feels just as creative as what’s inside?  This fabric book cover is a fun way to turn an ordinary sketchbook...

As you start focusing on the next season’s creative projects, it’s never too early to think about charitable crafting. Whether you’re a knitter, crocheter, or general crafter, there are many places that could use your generous donations. You don’t even have to start a new project from scratch. Your scraps and misfit...

by Risa Iwasaki Culbertson My original Wearable Wins coveralls are nearly 6 years old now. Aside from a little fading with the markers, I’m still very happy with how they look. I wear them quite often and they look really well preserved. My personal motto when it comes to clothes is: “If it can’t survive me, it’s not meant to be.” I like...

Whether you’re heading back to school soon or just craving something new, late summer is the perfect time to open all the windows, put on some music, and make your space feel a little homier. From dorm rooms to craft rooms to just a small corner refresh, a few handmade touches can make an impact without taking up much room or stretching your...

It was a Sunday the middle of February, past the hubbub of the holidays, and my kindergartener wanted to celebrate something, anything. “It’s the cats’ birthdays RIGHT NOW” she insisted, despite it being nowhere close to their actual birthday, and it was clear arguing wasn’t going to help. Always up for an excuse to...

There’s something undeniably refreshing about a cold glass of lemonade on a warm afternoon. A Lemonade Spritz takes that classic summer favorite and makes it effervescent with sparkling water, fresh citrus and herbs, and optional spirits for a cocktail version. Whether you’re hosting a gathering or simply looking for an afternoon...

The first time I did a 100 Day Project, I found it to be utterly life-changing. I know this sounds hyperbolic and over-dramatic but there’s just no other way to put it. I had previously spent a ridiculous amount of money getting an MFA degree and that didn’t teach me nearly as much about being an artist as the 100 Day Project, so when I say...

In May I went to St. Louis Missouri to attend Creativation by NAMTA (National Art Materials Trade Association) trade show. NAMTA, now called International Art Materials Association, is the largest global non-profit trade association dedicated to the fine art and craft materials industry. Located in the historic downtown of the city, the trade show...

Stay cool on sunny days and add a handmade touch to your summer outfits with this lacy crochet bandana pattern. The triangle head scarf has a beautiful shell pattern and helps keep your hair away from your face. Find the free pattern below with step-by-step photos and a handy chart. What I love about crocheting a triangular shape in rows is...

I found pottery at a point in my life when I was completely burned out from a career in surface pattern design. Burned out from producing, from working with an agent, from constantly pushing art out into the world. It wasn’t just creative burnout—it was mental exhaustion. The kind that makes everything feel dull, even the things you used to love....

Celebrate Me Made May with the Creativebug Team! Me Made May is a month dedicated to appreciating and wearing more of your handmade clothes. Last year, we blogged about all the wonderful garments made by our Creativebug members. This year we’re sharing some favorite me-mades from our Creativebug staff. While Me Made May began with sewn...

Yarn is transformative in more ways than you might think. You can knit and crochet yarn into toys, clothes, home décor, and anything you can dream of in 2D and 3D. Most importantly, yarn can also transform you. A growing number of studies and surveys reveal the many mental health benefits of knitting and crocheting. Yarn crafts are relaxing,...

Hi, I’m Katia Ferris, a SF-based doll designer and Creativebug instructor. We don’t usually associate knitting with instant gratification. It’s more often seen as a slow, mindful practice—one meditative stitch after another, ideally accompanied by a cup of tea. But every now and then, it’s nice to have a project that comes together a bit...

I’ve always been curious about pressing flowers but didn’t know where to start. I love saving beautiful little bits of urban walks and nature hikes as mementos, but once they’re dry, what do you do with them? This month, I have a new class releasing called Make an Upcycled Flower...

For a sweet and unforgettable Valentine’s Day gift, crochet a special keepsake box that looks just like a fancy little cake. Start with a store-bought wooden box as a form and use the patterns and techniques from my class Crochet Cakery: A Daily Practice to decorate it. Crochet Cakery is free to watch this month so that everyone can crochet...

I am an aggressively crafty person and love trying all sorts of different art forms. But, I realized recently that when embarking upon my favorite forms of art making – altered books, collage, and quilting – the starting process is exactly the same. I find material for low or no cost, cut it up, and then reassemble it. I’ve met...

To say I love my Little Free Library is an understatement. I am obsessed. I’m totally enchanted by my Little Free Library, I’m wild about other people’s Little Free Libraries, I’m fascinated by watching the ones in my neighborhood evolve and grow. I visit Little Free Libraries when I take trips – check out their world...

My favorite wool slippers are cozy companions on chilly mornings, but after a few years, they are showing some wear. I bought them at a street fair in Berlin so they are not easily replaced, but I also wanted to show them some appreciation in the form of mending. MENDING LEARNING JOURNEY  I suppose I could have just hand sewn the...

Even in California, these last few weeks have been cold. For folks NOT in California, that might sound ridiculous. But for me, seeing my breath in my kitchen come out in a puff of steam at seven am isn’t what I’m used to. I’ve switched out the quilt on the bed for a down comforter, admonished my five-year-old for wearing anything...

by Dawn DeVries Sokol  It’s the most wonderful time of the year! And it doesn’t feel that way to me without my holiday art journal.  For the last 15 years or so, I’ve kept a holiday art journal to get myself into the spirit. Some years are more prolific than others, but whatever happens in the journal becomes a record of the season....

by Donovan Russell, Library Specialist at the Berkeley Public Library I work as a Library Specialist at the Berkeley Public Library, and one of the best parts of my job is designing and running programs for our community. At the beginning of 2025, I launched a monthly “Art Club” — and to my surprise (and delight), it was a hit almost right...

by Michelle Will, Kitsap Regional Library As a librarian and a paper artist, I plan a lot of paper crafts for our library programs, but I was running low on ideas. So, when our library acquired Creativebug I was excited to start using it. In the past, I taught classes like altered books, book folding, artist trading cards, and junk journalling....

Find the free crochet patterns below for the basic napkin ring base as well as the English oak leaf. The...

I find seasonal crafting totally irresistible, don’t you? I came across these gigantic acorn caps in early October in Pennsylvania and knew I had to sew velvet acorns. If you can’t find acorn caps where you live, check out Etsy. And if you’re foraging your own, be sure to leave the nut behind for the critters who need it. If you’ve...

You can crochet a cute and stylish granny square bag with just 13 granny squares! Making a bag is super approachable and much quicker to crochet than a sweater or blanket but still highlights the always-on-trend vibes of a crocheted square. I provide the pattern for the sunburst granny square that I used at the bottom of this post, but you can use...

That’s exactly how I felt when trying out junk journaling. If you’ve spent any time in online craft spaces, junk journaling has likely crossed your view. I love...
